Can galvanized pipe be used for gas ?

time2024/12/27

Today galvanized pipe is no longer prohibited from being used for natural gas. "Steel pipe must be Schedule 40 or heavier, must comply with one of the listed standards and can be black iron or galvanized. Contrary to popular belief, natural gas does not adversely react with the zinc coating on galvanized pipe".
The two most common types of steel pipe used to carry water and gas are black pipe and galvanized pipe.
In the old days, for Gas Pipe its better to use Black pipe. This was generally due to the poor quality of galvanizing. Today using galvanized pipe generally presents no threat. The flaking off of galvanizing inside the pipe was caused by other gases such as coal tar gas which was "manufactured gas" not natural.
"Steel pipe must be Schedule 40 or heavier, must comply with one of the listed standards and can be black iron or galvanized. Contrary to popular belief, natural gas does not adversely react with the zinc coating on galvanized pipe". Identical language is also used in the 2006 Edition in the Code and Commentary of the IFGC (International Fuel Gas Code ).
Plumbers tend to use black pipe with gas for two main reasons. One is that it costs less than galvanized. The other is that if galvanized pipes are used for water then using black for gas distinguishes the two uses. A good suggestion if run black iron pipe for gas on the exterior of a building is painting yellow to prevent rust streaks. It depends on construction project.
The Difference Between Black Pipe & Galvanized Pipe:

1. Galvanized Pipe Pipeline

Galvanized steel pipe is a popular choice for water supply systems due to its corrosion resistance and durability. The process of galvanization involves coating the steel with a layer of zinc, which acts as a protective barrier against moisture and environmental factors that can lead to rust and corrosion. Youfa brand 3/4″ 1" galvanized pipes is to carry natural gas into homes and businesses because of its high quality of galvanizing.

2. Black Pipe Pipeline

Black steel pipe is different from galvanized pipe because it is uncoated. The dark color comes from the iron-oxide formed on its surface during manufacturing. The primary purpose of black steel pipe is to carry natural gas into homes and businesses. Black seamless pipe is manufactured without a seam, making it a stronger and safer pipe to carry gas. The black welded steel pipe is also used for fire sprinkler systems.
Summary:
*Black pipe and galvanized pipe are made of steel;
*Galvanized pipe has a zinc coating, black pipe does not;
*Galvanized pipe is ideal for carrying water; Black pipe and galvanized pipe are suitable for carrying gas;
*Galvanized pipe is more expensive because of zinc coating;
*Galvanized pipe is more durable.
